Available Headache Treatments
We all have had a headache from time to time. Headaches can be an inconvenience or they can be so painful and frequent that they disrupt your life. There are no definite answers as to what causes headaches.
Doctors usually diagnosis headaches as being in one of three categories. Primary headaches are the least serious and the most common type of headache. Secondary and cluster headaches are a lot less common. Usually headaches are not something to worry about unless you are having secondary headaches, which could be a symptom of a more serious neurological problem. That is why it is important to seek medical attention for headaches that occur frequently and seem to get worse over time.
Generally, headaches are only the primary type and are easily treatable by taking Aleve and Ibuprofen you can buy over the counter. Cluster headaches, which can be extremely painful, may have to be treated with prescription pain pills to allow people to function in their daily lives.
Other headache treatments include biofeedback, massage therapy and psychotherapy which can be used to reduce stress levels and prevent headaches before they start. Most headaches are caused at least in part by stress whether it is physical or emotional stress so it is important to manage your stress.
Extremely difficult physical labor can cause stress and lead to headaches. When you are under stress, the muscles around your head tighten and cause pressure to build up. Preventing headaches is just as important as treating them. Avoiding stressful situations and learning to deal with your daily stress through relaxation techniques can stop headaches before they happen. If you are doing a lot of physical work makes sure you reduce the stress on your body by taking periodic breaks.
If you have headaches often and they just sort of come and go with no pattern, you may have a more serious problem than the headaches. Doctors will run tests to make sure there is not an underlying condition causing the headaches that needs to be diagnosed and treated. These kind of headaches can be the result of neurological issues in your brain. These are called secondary headaches and can be the result of a brain tumor, chemical imbalance or bleeding in the brain. You should get checked out right away if you are experiencing secondary headaches so if there is a problem you can get it diagnosed and treated quickly.
